History & character
From Settlement to Urban Neighborhood
The Jägerzeile originated as a settlement for retired court hunters of Emperor Maximilian II, who were granted building plots in the Venediger Au since 1569. The road to the city became known as Jägerzeile, and by 1660 the definitive name developed. The suburb bordered Leopoldstadt to the north and included the area of the Wurstelprater and the sparsely populated Venediger Au. In 1841, the land ownership came into the possession of the city of Vienna. Today, Jägerzeile is a district in the 2nd municipal district, with its building protection zone extending between Praterstraße and Czerningasse. The character of the area is shaped by a blend of historical settlement and urban development, making it a quiet and pleasant residential location in Leopoldstadt.
