History & character
From a Bourgeois Residential Area to a Modern Quarter
Pratercottage was once a bourgeois residential area in Leopoldstadt, located between the main alley of the Prater and the Danube Canal. From the second half of the 19th century, representative villas of wealthy citizens were built here. The upper part of the area, developed after the dissolution of the Tiergarten at Schüttel, is today referred to as the Tiergartenviertel. The area is historically known as Am Schüttel, which is reflected in the nearby Schüttelstraße. The architecture is characterized by classical block edge buildings along the Danube Canal, while the inner areas feature mainly detached villas and post-war buildings with front gardens.
Today, Pratercottage is a quiet, attractive neighborhood that combines both historical and modern elements. The picturesque sculptor studios of the Academy of Fine Arts and various schools shape the character of the area. Additionally, there are sacred buildings, such as the parish church Am Schüttel and the oldest Mormon meeting house in Vienna. The blend of history and contemporary use makes Pratercottage an interesting place to live.
