Stuwerviertel

History & character

From Wurstelprater to Urban District

The Stuwerviertel, a district of Leopoldstadt, has a dynamic history. Originally characterized by meadows and woods, the area was opened to the public in 1766 when the Vienna Prater became accessible. Subsequently, the Wurstelprater amusement park was established, and the district was named after Johann Georg Stuwer, who organized popular fireworks in the 18th century. From the 1880s onwards, the area was developed, leading to the construction of numerous Gründerzeit buildings that still shape the cityscape today. Throughout the 20th century, the district became increasingly urbanized, with schools and public facilities being established.

Today, the Stuwerviertel is marked by a mix of historic buildings and modern developments. Its proximity to the Prater and the Danube gives the district a unique atmosphere. Furthermore, the opening of subway stations in recent decades has improved public transport connections. Despite the challenges associated with its historical red-light district, Stuwerviertel is a vibrant place with a diverse population and ongoing development.
