History & character
From Freight Station to City of the Future
The Nordbahnviertel, also known as Nordbahnhofviertel, is a district in the 2nd district of Vienna, Leopoldstadt, being developed on the site of the former Nordbahnhof and later the Freight Station Vienna Nord. Until the first regulation of the Danube in the late 19th century, the area was part of the Danube floodplains. The construction of the first Vienna Nordbahnhof began in 1837, and by World War I, the railway area had steadily expanded, particularly due to coal and freight transport. With the dissolution of the Habsburg monarchy and the destruction following World War II, the railway area lost its significance, and in 1978 the first urban development study for the repurposing of the site was published. However, development of the quarter only began in the 1990s in anticipation of Expo 95.
Today, the Nordbahnviertel is a developing urban area with a vision that emphasizes mixed-use and social structures as well as ecological aspects. By the expected completion in 2030, 20,000 people are to live here and 20,000 jobs are to be created, while the Rudolf-Bednar-Park and other green spaces contribute to the quality of life.
