Karmeliterviertel

History & character

From Market to Cultural Hub

The Karmeliterviertel has its origins in 1671 when Emperor Leopold I established a market in front of the Carmelite Church to attract new residents after the expulsion of Jews. This market existed until 1888 and was later relocated to Karmelitergasse. In 1910, the market found its current location between Im Werd, Haid-, Leopolds- and Krummbaumgasse. After being destroyed in World War II, it was rebuilt in 1949 and underwent modernization in 1997. Today, Karmelitermarkt is not only a place for trade but also a cultural center regularly used for events. The market features a colorful mix of fruit and vegetable stalls, an Islamic butcher, and fishmongers, while some eateries offer specialties from Georgia and Turkey. Particularly on Saturdays, the market attracts many visitors who appreciate both traditional and modern offerings.
