Volkertviertel

History & character

From Palais to Protected Building Zone

The Volkertviertel in the 2nd district of Vienna, Leopoldstadt, is named after the Volkertmarkt, located in the center of the district. The name refers to the Counts of Volkhra, who once owned property and had a palace in the area, which was demolished in the early 20th century. The district is bounded from Praterstern by Nordbahnstraße, Heinestraße, Castellezgasse, Scherzergasse, and Am Tabor, and was sometimes referred to as Nordbahnviertel in the 20th century. Today, the area is characterized by a building protection zone that encompasses many historical buildings, particularly around the Volkertmarkt.

The district is home to several schools and notable structures, including the old toll building from 1698 and the neo-Gothic primary school on Vereinsgasse. Over the years, the Volkertmarkt has changed, currently offering fewer market stalls than in the 1970s. The area is well-connected by public transport, with tram lines and the subway nearby, making it an attractive residential area in Vienna.
