History & character

From Former Vineyards to Urban Center

The Alsergrund is the 9th district of Vienna and has its roots in an area that was partially used for viticulture in the Middle Ages. Originally, river arms of the Danube flowed through the area, including the Salzgriesarm, the course of which is only faintly discernible in the topography today. Over time, the waterways silted up and were eventually filled in. The district was formed in 1850 from seven suburbs, the names of which are still preserved as district parts today. The heavy construction has significantly altered the original landscape, and the few remaining elevation differences are shaped by urban development.

Today, Alsergrund is a densely populated district, with 58.9% of its area designated as building land. Despite the high density of construction, there are also public facilities and cultural offerings that shape the district's character. The district is particularly known for its Gründerzeit quarters and offers an urban living space that reflects its historical development and former agricultural uses.
