History & character
From Pastures to Urban Neighborhood
Roßau, originally known as Oberer Werd, got its name from the pastures for the horses that pulled the Danube ships. In the Middle Ages, the area was characterized by a fishing village located along the Danube Canal. The church of St. Johann, first mentioned in 1255, served as a focal point of the village, which thrived on fishing. Over the centuries, Roßau underwent significant changes due to fires and war events, but the character of the area as a water-rich landscape remained for a long time. In the 19th century, after the end of feudalism, Roßau became part of Vienna in 1849 and was assigned to the 8th district in 1850, which was later declared the 9th district. Today, Roßau is an urban neighborhood in Alsergrund, shaped by its proximity to the Inner City and the Danube Canal. The architectural protection zone of Roßau preserves its historical substance and contributes to the charm of the district.
