History & character
From River Island to Urban Community
Lichtental was first documented in 1280 as "Lichtenwerd", a name referring to its location between the Danube Canal and a silted-up arm of the Danube. Originally part of Roßau, Johann Adam Andreas Prince Liechtenstein began constructing a brewery in 1694, which significantly contributed to the development of the settlement. From 1699, the area was parcelled out, and the planned settlement grew rapidly. By around 1730, Lichtental extended across the entire area, necessitating the construction of a church, which was completed in 1718. Following the abolition of feudal rights in 1848, Lichtental became part of the city of Vienna and was incorporated into the Alsergrund district in 1850. Today, Lichtental is a quiet urban district characterized by its architectural protection zones and historical development.

Real building heights (official Vienna building model, computed from the BEV laser scan in the surroundings), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. In Vienna the terrain rarely matters: ten minutes in the Innere Stadt, and just as little at the Döbling vineyards, where the slope lies to the north-west and never touches the southern sun. It only tells in the Wienerwald valleys, at Kalksburg a good two hours on 21 December.
