History & character
From Suburb to Viennese Cultural District
Himmelpfortgrund was an independent municipality until 1850 and then became part of the 9th district of Vienna, Alsergrund. The name derives from the Himmelpfort monastery, which was linked to a part of the Pötzleinsdorf estate in the 17th century. After the monastery was dissolved in 1783, Himmelpfortgrund began to develop. In 1825, the municipal authorities purchased the area from the imperial state property administration, strengthening local governance. Today, the area around Nussdorfer Straße, associated with the birthplace of composer Franz Schubert, is designated as a building protection zone. It also features other cultural sites that recall the district's history. The character of Himmelpfortgrund today is marked by a blend of historical substance and modern life, making it an interesting place to live.
