History & character
From Municipality to Urban Culture
Alservorstadt was an independent municipality until 1850 and developed along Alser Straße after the second Turkish siege of Vienna in 1683 in a previously sparsely populated area. In the late 17th century, Croats, Slovaks, and Slovenes were forced to settle in the Krowotendörfl north of Alser Straße. Alservorstadt was also home to several poorhouses and hospitals, which led to the establishment of numerous cemeteries. The General Hospital was opened in 1784, and during this time, the Vienna Foundling House and the k. k. Rifle Factory were established.
Today, Alservorstadt is a vibrant district that retains traces of its history in its architecture and infrastructure. Its proximity to educational institutions and cultural diversity shape the character of the neighborhood, making it an attractive place to live in Vienna.
