History & character
From Benedictine Abbey to Hospital District
The name Michelbeuern originates from the Benedictine abbey Michaelbeuern near Salzburg. In 1072, the properties were mentioned as 'Hof zu Waring', extending over parts of present-day Währing. With the construction of the Linienwall in 1704, Michelbeuern was separated from Währing and incorporated into Alservorstadt. Until the mid-19th century, development was sparse, with the Brünnlbad and Brünnlmühle located in the south. The k.k. privileged steam engine factory was founded in 1836, and between 1848 and 1853, the Lower Austrian State Asylum was built, which remained until 1974. The construction of the New General Hospital led to the demolition of the historic building.
