History & character
From Uninhabited Area to Urban Neighborhood
Althangrund was an independent municipality until 1850 and was then incorporated into the 9th district of Alsergrund in Vienna. The area remained uninhabited for a long time but received its name from Christoph Johann Graf Althan, who acquired the region in 1690. A genuine settlement began in 1724 when a row of residential houses was built on Althanstraße. In the 19th century, Spittelau became the starting point for the Kaiser Ferdinand Water Pipeline before the Spittelau waste incineration plant was built in its place. The Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof was constructed in 1872 on the site of the former Palais Althan-Pouthon, and from 1978, the Althanstraße university center was established, housing the Vienna University of Economics and Business and other institutions.
Today, Althangrund is characterized by a blend of historical architecture and modern facilities. Its proximity to the Danube Canal and diverse educational offerings make the district an attractive place to live for various demographics. The neighborhood combines urban life with a touch of history, providing a tranquil atmosphere in the heart of the city.
