History & character
From Suburbs to Bourgeois Noble District
Währing, the 18th district of Vienna, was established in 1892 through the incorporation of several suburbs like Währing, Gersthof, and Pötzleinsdorf. Originally a merger, the district was reduced in size in 1938 by the detachment of Neustift am Walde and Salmannsdorf. The history of Währing is marked by discussions about incorporation in the 1870s, initiated by local figures. The district developed rapidly and became the administrative center with the construction of the Währing Town Hall. The opening of Türkenschanzpark in 1888 was another significant moment that solidified the connection to Vienna. During World War II, Währing was a center of resistance against the Nazi regime, adding to the district's historical significance. Today, Währing is considered a bourgeois noble district, known for its numerous villas and Gründerzeit quarters, creating a pleasant living environment.
