History & character
From Franconian Settlement to Urban District
Pötzleinsdorf, one of the 89 cadastral communities in Vienna, is believed to have been founded as a Middle German-Franconian settlement. The name giver of the village likely received the area as a grant or fief. By the 14th century, the decline of the feudal system began, and the former castle had turned into a free court. The settlers primarily engaged in viticulture. The history of the area was marked by fluctuating feudal ownership, including a long period under the ownership of the St. Agnes convent. After the dissolution of the convent, Countess Philippina von Herberstein acquired the land, which eventually came into the possession of banker Johann Heinrich Geymüller in 1801. The Second Turkish Siege of Vienna in 1683 and a major fire in 1750 left their marks, but the village quickly recovered. In the 19th century, Pötzleinsdorf's growth lagged behind that of neighboring areas, and its character as a wine-growing village remained largely intact until 1890. With the unification of Vienna and its suburbs, Pötzleinsdorf became part of the 18th District of Währing in 1892, having only 737 inhabitants at that time.
Today, Pötzleinsdorf presents itself as a quiet district with a mix of historical elements and modern living spaces. Its proximity to nature and charming atmosphere attract many people looking to reside here.
