History & character

From Bavarian Settlement to Urban Diversity

Ottakring, the 16th district of Vienna, has its roots in the 8th century when the Bavarians settled the area. The name derives from the Bavarians, who also have places with similar names in Bavaria. In 1892, Ottakring was formed from the independent municipalities of Ottakring and Neulerchenfeld. In the following decades, the district experienced significant growth, particularly due to the establishment of industrial enterprises, which led to a high working-class population. After severe unrest and the construction of municipal housing in the 1920s, the precarious housing situation was improved. World War II brought challenges, but the reconstruction and renovation of the oldest parts of the district were eventually realized.

Today, Ottakring is a multicultural and urban district characterized by the revitalization of public spaces and a vibrant cultural scene. Particularly, the central areas have benefited from the U3 terminus in Alt-Ottakring, making the district an attractive place to live.
