History & character
From Settlement to Urban Development
Neulerchenfeld was founded after the devastating effects of the Second Turkish Siege of Vienna. The oldest part of Ottakring was completely destroyed in 1683, which led many survivors to settle closer to the city. Initially known as Unter-Ottakring, the area was named Neulerchenfeld around 1703. The settlement grew rapidly, counting 150 houses with about 3,000 inhabitants by 1732. While Neulerchenfeld was initially characterized by craftsmanship, it experienced a significant upswing from 1872 when it became an independent municipality and, due to the building boom from 1850 to 1890, its population rose to over 45,000. Today, Neulerchenfeld is an urban district in the 16th Viennese district of Ottakring, characterized by multi-storey tenement houses and a diverse residential culture.
