Weinhaus

History & character

From Vineyards to a Quiet Residential Area

Weinhaus is a district in the 18th district of Vienna, Währing, and one of the 89 Viennese cadastral communities. The origin of the name is unclear, but it is first documented in 1267. A legend suggests that a wealthy citizen built a wine house on the southern slopes of the Hohe Warte in the late Middle Ages, which may have led to the naming. Historically, Weinhaus was limited in its development due to its geographic location in the narrow valley of the Währingerbach and the surrounding hills, resulting in a small population and infrastructure. In the Middle Ages, viticulture was the primary source of income, and despite various ownership disputes, the village remained small until the 17th century. The close connection to Währing is evident in the shared use of infrastructure, as the residents of Weinhaus attended schools and churches in Währing. Today, Weinhaus is a quiet residential area that impresses with its historical charm and proximity to nature.
