History & character
From Wolfsau to Brigittenau
Brigittenau, the 20th district of Vienna, has its roots in the 11th century when the area was first mentioned in documents. At that time, it belonged to the Babenberg family and was later gifted to the St. Maria Nivenburg monastery. The first settlers were fishermen, hunters, and woodcutters, followed by gardeners and innkeepers. The name Brigittenau derives from the Brigittakapelle, built between 1645 and 1651. In 1900, the area was officially separated from Leopoldstadt as its own district. The Danube regulation from 1868 to 1875 led to the creation of new land, advancing the development of Brigittenau as a residential and commercial area. Today, Brigittenau presents itself as an urban district without a prominent historical center, characterized by diverse architecture and a vibrant community.
