History & character
From Toll Station to Urban Development
Zwischenbrücken was once an independent municipality, its name deriving from its location between two Danube bridges. The large and small Tabor bridges, built in the 17th century, enabled the settlement of the area. Toll collectors and soldiers constructed the first buildings, accompanied by inns and ship mills. The Johannes Nepomuk Chapel, built in 1769, is a testament to the area's ecclesiastical history. In the 19th century, Zwischenbrücken experienced a boom with the construction of the Kaiser Ferdinand North Railway and the establishment of industrial enterprises. In 1850, it was incorporated into Vienna and underwent significant changes due to the Danube regulation from 1870, leading to the demolition of part of the area. The historical name remains visible today within the district borders.
Today, Zwischenbrücken is an urban district in the 2nd and 20th districts of Vienna, characterized by a mix of residential and commercial buildings, as well as its proximity to new urban developments. The former peripheral location has transformed in recent years as the area becomes increasingly integrated into the central city.
