History & character
From Hunting Lodge to Urban Diversity
Favoriten, the 10th district of Vienna, derives its name from the Favorita, a former hunting lodge. The settlement that developed outside the old city fortifications was established as a new district in 1874. Originally part of the incorporated Wieden in 1850, Favoriten experienced several expansions until it reached the Donauländebahn. The population grew significantly in the 19th and 20th centuries, particularly due to an influx of workers and immigrants, making the district an important residential area for many. The last major boundary changes occurred in 1954, and since then, the structure has remained largely stable.
Today, over 220,000 people live in Favoriten, accounting for about 11 percent of Vienna's total population. The district is characterized by high diversity, with a significant proportion of foreigners and a varied social structure. Despite a lower average income and a high rate of registered unemployment, Favoriten has developed into a vibrant district, distinguished by its cultural diversity and the mix of different life realities.
