History & character
From Agricultural Village to Urban Expansion
Rothneusiedl was an independent municipality until 1938 and likely originated in the 9th century when new settlers arrived in the area. The first documented mention dates back to 1301 as Newsidel. The name may derive from the red soil or the deforestation activities. Agriculture strongly shaped the village, which is still evident today. Industrialization had little impact, but in the 19th century, brick clay was extracted in the surrounding area. With the annexation of Austria to the German Reich in 1938, Rothneusiedl was incorporated into Vienna, which was confirmed in 1954 after World War II. Today, Rothneusiedl is a district in the 10th district of Vienna, Favoriten, characterized by a rural atmosphere with agricultural land and gardens. Plans for the subway extension to Rothneusiedl illustrate ambitions for further development of the area.
