Oberlaa

History & character

From Laa to a Modern Urban Community

Oberlaa was originally an independent Lower Austrian local community and was first mentioned in records in 1140. The area formed a unit with the neighboring Unterlaa under the name Laa. Oberlaa itself was first documented in 1324 and faced various challenges over the centuries, including the Turkish sieges of Vienna and the occupation by Napoleon's troops. In 1849, the feudal system was abolished, and Oberlaa gained the status of an autonomous municipality. The opening of the Donauländebahn in 1872 further connected it to Vienna. From 1890/1892, Oberlaa became part of the 10th district of Vienna, with its incorporation in 1938 leading to its complete integration into the city. The development continued with the establishment of the spa center and Therme Wien in 1974, which made Oberlaa known beyond the region.

Today, Oberlaa is a vibrant district with about 21,000 residents, characterized by its thermal spring and its connection to the Vienna public transport network. The character of the area combines urban living with recreational opportunities, making it an attractive place to live.
