History & character
From Former Community to Urban Quarter
Unterlaa was originally a Lower Austrian local community and was first mentioned in a document in 1271. The area used to form a unit with the upstream Oberlaa, known collectively as Laa. Throughout its history, Unterlaa suffered from various sieges, including the Second Turkish Siege of Vienna and the French invasion in 1809. With the law of October 1, 1938, Unterlaa became part of Greater Vienna and was later assigned to the 10th district, Favoriten, after World War II. The Knights of Malta were the landowners of the area until 1848, and until the mid-19th century, viticulture was also practiced here.
Today, Unterlaa is a quiet neighborhood in the southeastern part of Favoriten, characterized by a mix of residential areas and agricultural land. The surroundings are shaped by the Liesing river, bordering the village of Kledering to the east. Unterlaa offers its residents a pleasant living quality close to nature and is well connected to the Vienna metropolitan area.
