History & character
From Avar Rule to Independent Municipality
Hennersdorf is a Lower Austrian municipality whose history dates back to the 6th century when the Avars exercised rule over Pannonia and settled Slavs here. The first documented mention dates back to 1114. For centuries, Hennersdorf was part of the Leopoldsdorf estate. In 1529 and 1683, the town was devastated by the Turks and was looted by Napoleonic soldiers in 1809. In 1850, Hennersdorf gained independence as a municipality and was part of the Schwechat judicial district. The establishment of brickworks in the second half of the 19th century led to a significant increase in population. After the annexation of Austria in 1938, Hennersdorf became part of Greater Vienna, until it regained independence and returned to Lower Austria in 1954. Today, Hennersdorf is a small, rural municipality with about 1513 inhabitants, directly bordering Vienna and primarily used for agriculture.
