History & character

From Murlingen to a Working-Class District

Meidling, originally known as Murlingen, has been documented since 1104 and largely belonged to the Klosterneuburg Monastery. In the Middle Ages, the region was characterized by field and wine cultivation. The discovery of a sulfur spring in 1755 made the Theresienbad a popular excursion destination. With the establishment of industrial enterprises at the end of the 18th century, the character of the area changed fundamentally. In 1892, the municipalities were consolidated into a district that was considered a typical working-class area. The development of infrastructure, such as the regulation of the Wien River and the construction of subway stations, contributed to urbanization.

Today, Meidling is a vibrant district that combines both rural and urban elements. The areas of Hetzendorf and Altmannsdorf have retained their rural character, while numerous residential complexes and municipal buildings have been developed throughout the district. The population has stabilized and is growing again since the turn of the millennium.
