History & character
From Suburb to Vienna District
Obermeidling is a district part of the 12th municipal district Meidling in Vienna and was an independent municipality in the 19th century. In 1806, the Viennese suburb of Meidling was divided into Obermeidling and Untermeidling. The new municipality included a row of houses on the "Anger an der Wien" as well as villas on the Grünen Berg. The densely built area is bounded by the Wienfluss, Grünbergstraße, Tivoligasse, and Rotenmühlgasse. The historical center of Meidling fell to Untermeidling. In 1830, the Tivoli amusement establishment opened in the south of Obermeidling, and its operation ceased in 1967. In 1890/1892, Obermeidling was incorporated into Vienna and has belonged to the 12th district since then.
Today, Obermeidling presents itself as a quiet urban quarter, distinguished by its proximity to nature and historical elements. Its location on the Grünen Berg and its closeness to Schloss Schönbrunn give the district a unique character.
