History & character
From Altmannsdorf to Modern Housing
Am Schöpfwerk is the name of two municipal housing complexes in Vienna, built between 1951 and 1980. The name derives from the former Schöpfwerk Altmannsdorf, which belonged to the facilities of an ice factory. The first complex was constructed based on plans by Franz Schuster, while the second, often simply referred to as Schöpfwerk, was designed by a team led by Viktor Hufnagl. The construction followed the principles of 'Red Vienna', aiming to create affordable housing with modern amenities. The development also took into account local supply options and good public transport connections. The settlement spans an area of 18 hectares, organized in rings, and offers a variety of apartment types, from maisonettes to studio apartments. The different apartment sizes and features contribute to the diversity and quality of life for residents.
