History & character
From Independent Community to Urban Integration
Altmannsdorf originated in the 12th century and is likely named after Bishop Altmann of Passau. Until 1891, the area was an independent municipality before it was largely incorporated into Vienna in 1892. However, a small part was annexed to Inzersdorf. Khleslplatz, formerly known as Kirchenplatz, is one of the few triangular village squares in Austria and shapes the local landscape. The Altmannsdorf parish church and Schloss Altmannsdorf, the former farmstead of the Augustinian Eremites, are significant historical buildings in the area. Until 2018, the Dr. Karl Renner Institute, the political academy of the SPÖ, was located here.
Today, Altmannsdorf is increasingly urbanized. The former cable factory is now being repurposed for residential use, and the municipal large housing complex Am Schöpfwerk adds to the housing options. Khleslplatz and its surroundings are designated as a building protection zone, preserving the historical character of the district.
