History & character
From Meinhartsdorf to Gaudenzdorf
Gaudenzdorf, a district part of the 12th Viennese municipal district of Meidling, was an independent municipality until 1890. Originally, the area was home to the settlement of Meinhartsdorf along the present-day Schönbrunner Straße. In 1819, Gaudenzdorf was established as an independent municipality, named after the Klosterneuburg provost Gaudentius Andreas Dunkler. The area developed rapidly, facilitated by its connection to the Wienfluss, leading to the construction of bridges and inns. Industrialization began in 1855 with the establishment of the Gaudenzdorf gasworks, changing the economic landscape of the district. Unrest during the March Revolution of 1848 and the founding of the first trade union in 1866 reflect an active social life within the community.
