History & character
From Suburban Community to Urban Enumeration District
Wilhelmsdorf was once an independent suburban community of Vienna, which has merged into today's 12th municipal district of Meidling. The settlement originated around 1770 when some houses were built near the brick ponds, a development fostered by Ignaz Ritter von Neuwall's brickworks. In the 1840s, residents sought independence and established their own municipality in 1846, named after the provost Wilhelm Sedlaczek. At that time, Wilhelmsdorf comprised 46 houses, but financial weakness led to its reunification with Untermeidling in 1850. The formation of the 12th Viennese district in 1890 included Wilhelmsdorf. Today, Wilhelmsdorf is known as an enumeration district, although its boundaries do not match those of the former municipality. Some street names and the Wilhelmsdorfer Park still remind us of the history of this area.
