History & character
From Forest Area to Urban Settlement
Gatterhölzl derives its name from the Middle High German word "chatte", referring to a small building without its own ground. In the Middle Ages, the area was characterized by a dense forest, home to a "chatter mill". With the construction of the hunting palace Katterburg and the partial clearing of the forest by Emperor Joseph II, the transformation began. From 1830 onwards, the Green Mountain developed into a popular excursion destination with the Tivoli amusement park. Settlement increased in the 19th century, and initial plans for a church emerged in 1901. After World War I, a temporary church was built, which was later elevated to parish church status. The construction of the current church took place between 1955 and 1959 and has since shaped the local landscape. Today, Gatterhölzl is an urban district with beautiful residential buildings and a vibrant community, preserving its roots in the nature and history of the region.
