History & character
From Manor to District of Wieden
Schaumburgergrund was an independent municipality until 1850, originally known as Am praiten Anger and Am Silbereck. The financial expert Gundaker Thomas Starhemberg acquired properties in the area in the early 18th century and had the Palais Schönburg built, which was elevated to a manor by Emperor Charles VI in 1716. The name Schaumburgergrund derives from the Counts of Schaunberg, the former owners of the properties. After the garden was divided into building parcels, a new suburb emerged, which remained under the ownership of the Starhemberg family until 1848. In 1850, the suburbs of Wieden, Schaumburgergrund, and Hungelbrunn were combined into the present-day 4th district of Wieden. Today, Schaumburgergrund is a district with a designated building protection zone that includes the Palais Schönburg and several late 19th-century houses.
