History & character
From Vineyard to District of Vienna
Hungelbrunn was an independent municipality until 1850 and is now a district of Vienna in the 4th municipal district, Wieden, as well as part of the 5th municipal district, Margareten, since 1861. The first documented mention of the area occurred around 1363 as Hungerprunn. The name derives from a legendary spring that supposedly only provided water in years of famine. Until about 1609, the area was mainly characterized by vineyards. The settlement grew slowly, with only eleven houses recorded in 1846. With its incorporation in 1850, Hungelbrunn became part of Vienna and found its place in the new 4th district.
Today, Hungelbrunn is a quiet district, distinguished by its location south of Wiedner Hauptstraße and the two non-contiguous parts in Wieden and Margareten. The neighborhood is characterized by a mix of residential buildings and small shops, giving the area a charming character.

Real building heights (official Vienna building model, computed from the BEV laser scan in the surroundings), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. In Vienna the terrain rarely matters: ten minutes in the Innere Stadt, and just as little at the Döbling vineyards, where the slope lies to the north-west and never touches the southern sun. It only tells in the Wienerwald valleys, at Kalksburg a good two hours on 21 December.
