History & character
From the Oldest Suburb to Margareten
Matzleinsdorf is a district in the 5th Vienna municipal district Margareten and is one of the oldest known suburbs of Vienna. The earliest documented mention dates back to 1136, when the place was referred to as Mazilinestorf, named after its founder Mazilo. The original town center was located along an ancient Roman road leading over the Wienerberg. Over the centuries, Matzleinsdorf experienced several devastations, including during the conflicts between Hungarian troops and the Habsburg monarchy in 1477, as well as during the Turkish sieges in the 16th century. The area continued to develop, and in the 18th century, Matzleinsdorf became part of the city of Vienna, leading to its incorporation and later status as part of the Margareten district. Today, Matzleinsdorf is a quiet neighborhood characterized by its historical development, offering a blend of urban life and traditional Viennese atmosphere.
