History & character
From Angerdorf to Town Community
Gerasdorf near Vienna has a long history dating back to the 13th century. The oldest places in the municipality are Gerasdorf and Seyring, with Gerasdorf being first documented around 1200. The original settlement form was a triangular village layout centered around a communal green space. Over the centuries, Gerasdorf was under various feudal lordships and became an independent local community in 1849. Following a series of political changes, including its incorporation into Greater Vienna and later rejoining Lower Austria, Gerasdorf was elevated to a market town in 1992 and to a town community in 1998.
Today, Gerasdorf presents itself as a town community with over 12,000 residents, located in the Weinviertel region at the northern border of Vienna. The municipality includes several localities, such as Gerasdorf, Kapellerfeld, and Seyring, and offers a mix of urban and rural character. The surrounding area is characterized by nature, with a small forested area, and its proximity to the city of Vienna makes Gerasdorf an attractive place to live.
