History & character
From Hunting Lodge to Prison
Kaiserebersdorf, first documented in 1108, was an independent municipality until 1891 and then became part of the 11th district of Vienna, Simmering. The earliest signs of settlement date back to the Urnfield period, while a castle was built in the 13th century, serving as the seat of the noble Ebersdorfer family. In 1499, the castle was expanded into a hunting and pleasure palace by Emperor Maximilian I, which was destroyed during the Second Turkish Siege of Vienna in 1683. After various uses, including as a barracks, the palace was converted into the Vienna Simmering correctional facility in 1968. The village character of the area faded only in the 1960s when residential buildings, schools, and shopping centers were constructed. Today, Kaiserebersdorf is a district characterized by historical substance while also offering modern living spaces.
