History & character
From Suburb to Urban Neighborhood
Breitenfeld emerged as one of Vienna's youngest suburbs and was declared a new place in 1802. Previously, the area was a large grain field owned by the Schottenstift. The first three houses were completed in 1802, and by 1830, the settlement was finished. Karl Georg Gaber, a significant promoter of the suburb, played a crucial role in its development by initiating lighting and sewage systems, among other things. The Breitenfeld parish church was consecrated only in 1898, when the area was already part of the urban cityscape. Today, Breitenfeld is a quiet district in the northwest of the Josefstadt district, characterized by a mix of historical and modern elements. The streets around Albert and Bennoplatz are designated as a building protection zone, giving the neighborhood a distinct character.
