History & character
From Manor to Viennese Idyl
Neuwaldegg was established relatively late. After the first Turkish siege of Vienna, Imperial Councilor Stefan Agler acquired a manor and fishpond in an area previously known as Ober-Dornbach. Agler renamed his estate to Neuwaldegger Hof, which was elevated to a noble seat in 1537. Over the years, the estate was continuously expanded. The Neuwaldegg Palace was built between 1692 and 1706 and later enlarged by Field Marshal Franz Moritz Graf von Lacy, who also created an English landscape garden. After the incorporation of Vienna in 1892, Neuwaldegg was a small, sleepy village with only 355 inhabitants. The park and palace fell into disrepair over the years until the Archdiocese of Vienna acquired the palace in 1951. Today, the Schwarzenberg Park is open to the public and serves as a significant recreational area in this quiet, green environment. Neuwaldegg combines historical elements with a rural character shaped by the Vienna Woods.
