History & character
From Medieval Village to Wine Tavern Spot
Neustift am Walde was first mentioned in a document in 1330 and likely emerged as a successor settlement to the abandoned village of Chlainzing. The residents were primarily farmers who produced for their own needs and cultivated wine. Over the centuries, the parish affiliation changed several times. The village suffered greatly during the Turkish sieges in the 16th century and from the damage caused by French troops in the 19th century. However, from the mid-19th century, Neustift experienced a revival due to tourism, becoming an attractive summer retreat for affluent Viennese. In 1892, Neustift am Walde was incorporated into the city of Vienna and assigned to the Döbling district in 1938, while the Neustifter cemetery remained part of the Währing district.
Today, Neustift am Walde is a quiet district that has retained its rural charm. The narrow streets and historical architecture give the area a serene atmosphere. Neustift is particularly known for its wine taverns, which attract visitors from Vienna and the surrounding areas, continuing the tradition of wine production.
