History & character
From Camaldolese Hermitage to Residential Area
Josefsdorf was once an independent municipality founded in 1628 by the Camaldolese monks. This Catholic religious community settled on the Kahlenberg and initially named the settlement Schweinsberg, after the mountain it was situated on. The hermitage resembled a small village, including a church and multiple cells for the hermits. After the hermitage was dissolved in 1782, the property changed hands several times and was ultimately renamed Josefsdorf in 1784 in honor of Joseph II. Over the years, the settlement remained small, with only a few dozen residents, and was incorporated into the neighboring Kahlenbergerdorf in 1809. In 1892, Josefsdorf was finally annexed to Vienna along with other suburbs. Today, it is a district in the 19th district of Döbling, characterized by its quiet location and the historical character of the former monastery settlement.
