Kahlenbergerdorf

History & character

From Farming Village to Vienna District

Kahlenbergerdorf, historically known as Kahlenbergerdörfl, was first mentioned in the 12th century. Originally an independent municipality, the area had an agricultural population engaged in subsistence farming and viticulture. In the Middle Ages, the region was heavily influenced by vineyards owned by the Klosterneuburg monastery and other monasteries. Following various historical upheavals, including the destruction of the church during the Turkish sieges, the village was incorporated into Vienna in 1892. It grew slowly in the following decades, possibly due to flooding and other natural events.

Today, Kahlenbergerdorf is a tranquil district on the right bank of the Danube, characterized by its location and preserved village atmosphere. The proximity to nature and the connection to Vienna's transport network make the district an attractive place to live, blending historical roots with modern life.

Real building heights (official Vienna building model, computed from the BEV laser scan in the surroundings), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. In Vienna the terrain rarely matters: ten minutes in the Innere Stadt, and just as little at the Döbling vineyards, where the slope lies to the north-west and never touches the southern sun. It only tells in the Wienerwald valleys, at Kalksburg a good two hours on 21 December.
