History & character
From Sufringen to Untersievering
Untersievering, a district in the 19th municipal district of Döbling in Vienna, was first mentioned in 1114 as Sufringen. The name evolved through various forms to Sievering and refers to the people belonging to a man named Suver. In the Middle Ages, the area was characterized by farmers who cultivated wine. The region suffered from the Turkish wars and the plague, which hampered development. However, Untersievering developed better than Obersievering, attributed to its better transport links and more favorable weather. In 1892, Untersievering was incorporated into Vienna along with other locations, at which time it had 1996 inhabitants.
Today, Untersievering is a quiet district with a mix of old and new buildings. The historical cores are still clearly recognizable, while the surrounding area has gradually urbanized. The Sieveringer parish church, dedicated to Saint Severin, and the remaining old structures give the district its unique character.
