Sievering

History & character

From Sufringen to Sievering Today

Sievering, a district in the 19th municipal district of Döbling in Vienna, originates from the formerly independent communities of Unter- and Obersievering until 1892. The name Sievering derives from its first documented mention as Sufringen in 1114, referring to belonging to a man named Suver(o)/Sufr. Over the centuries, the name was also associated with St. Severin. Historically, the area was characterized by agricultural use, with vine growing for sale and a workers' settlement during Roman times. The two places experienced different developments, especially during the Turkish wars and the plague, which severely hindered growth.

Today, Sievering presents itself as a quiet district where the old town centers of Unter- and Obersievering are still clearly recognizable. With a mix of historical buildings and modern apartment houses, the neighborhood has developed into an attractive residential area that combines a rural atmosphere with proximity to the city.
