Salmannsdorf

History & character

From Wine Village to Döbling District

Salmannsdorf was first mentioned in 1279 as Salmanstorf. The name derives from the personal name Salman(n) or the profession of Salmann, a trustee or scribe of the land register. The popular derivation of the name from the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman I. belongs to the realm of legends. Originally, Salmannsdorf developed as a typical wine-growing village. By 1680, the village already had 30 houses, but its development was severely hampered by the destruction during the Turkish sieges and several major fires. It was not until the mid-19th century that growth began, when Salmannsdorf was discovered as a summer retreat for the less affluent, including the family of Johann Strauss. In 1892, Salmannsdorf was incorporated into Vienna along with other places and has been part of the 19th district of Döbling since 1938. Today, Salmannsdorf is a quiet district that has retained its rural charm and is surrounded by vineyards.

Real building heights (official Vienna building model, computed from the BEV laser scan in the surroundings), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. In Vienna the terrain rarely matters: ten minutes in the Innere Stadt, and just as little at the Döbling vineyards, where the slope lies to the north-west and never touches the southern sun. It only tells in the Wienerwald valleys, at Kalksburg a good two hours on 21 December.
