History & character
From Gravel Island to Community
Bruckhaufen, part of the Floridsdorf district in Vienna, got its name from the gravel and sand islands that existed before the regulation of the Danube. Originally, Bruckhaufen referred to an island between two bridges. With the Danube's channelization, the area became part of a large island between the new main stream and the Old Danube, which was owned by the Klosterneuburg Monastery. From 1871, the island was used as a military shooting range, while a landfill operated until the 1960s. In the early 20th century, Bruckhaufen developed into a recreational area with bathing huts and allotment gardens, and the residents founded the 'Donauland' association in 1925, leading to the legalization of the settlement in the late 1920s.
Today, Bruckhaufen is a quiet neighborhood, distinguished by its proximity to the Old Danube and various leisure opportunities. The Muslim community is represented by the mosque of the Islamic Center, while the Roman Catholic parish church of St. Elisabeth serves as another religious hub.
