History & character
From Neolithic Settlement to Modern District
Leopoldau, with settlements dating back to the Neolithic period, was first mentioned in writing in 1125. The area was long marked by military incursions, floods, and epidemics. In the Middle Ages, the residents primarily relied on fishing for their livelihood. From the 19th century onwards, Leopoldau developed further with the construction of factories and residential buildings. In 1904, the once-independent municipality was incorporated into the 21st district of Vienna, Floridsdorf. Despite initial resistance from the Leopoldau farmers against this incorporation, the region ultimately became part of Vienna.
Today, Leopoldau features a distinctive village center characterized by small-scale farming operations. The Baroque church Maria im Elend and protected fields in the northern part of the village center reflect its rural past. The Großfeldsiedlung, one of the first satellite settlements in Vienna, along with numerous residential complexes, provides modern housing and contributes to a vibrant community.
