Großjedlersdorf

History & character

From Island to Industrial Settlement

Großjedlersdorf, a district part of the 21st municipal district of Floridsdorf in Vienna, has a long history that dates back to 1108 when the place was first mentioned as Urliugestorf. Its geographical location on an island formed by the side arms of the Danube shaped the development of the quarter. Until the 19th century, remnants of the side arm were recognizable as grazing land and in the form of ponds. The village community was marked by various events over the centuries, including destruction during the Turkish sieges and the plague catastrophe. In the 19th century, the establishment of the Wiener Lokomotiv-Fabriks-Actien-Gesellschaft initiated an industrial transformation that was further advanced by the construction of railway lines and staff houses. In 1905, Großjedlersdorf was finally incorporated into the 21st district.

Today, Großjedlersdorf is a neighborhood characterized by a mix of residential areas, industrial zones, and allotment gardens. The historical agricultural past is visible in street names such as Schwemmäckergasse. Despite its industrial character and proximity to the A22, the district has never really established itself in public consciousness, which is reflected in the unclear boundaries with neighboring areas.
