Schwarze Lackenau

History & character

From Island to Urban Area

The Schwarze Lackenau, also known as Schwarzlackenau, was once an island in the Danube, formed by the side arm of the river called Schwarze Lacke. This island was often affected by floods during high water. With the regulation of the Danube, the Schwarze Lacke was separated from the main stream and filled with rubble and waste until the 1970s, leading to the loss of its island character. Today, the Schwarze Lackenau is bordered to the north by the Marchfeld Canal, while the Jedleseer Aupark represents a remnant of the former floodplain forests. The cadastral community covers an area of 518.62 ha, with a portion extending into the district of Döbling. A notable feature is the cherry grove, a symbol of friendship between Austria and Japan, designed by a Japanese artist group in 2002.
