History & character
From Farming and Fishing Village to Urban Oasis
Jedlesee was an independent municipality until 1894 and became a district of Vienna in 1905, located in the 21st district, Floridsdorf. The settlement likely originated as a Frankish re-establishment after Otto I's victory over the Magyars. The place was mentioned in a donation document as early as 1014. Originally, Jedlesee was a farming and fishing village in the Danube floodplain, repeatedly devastated by floods and ice flows. It was only through the Danube regulation between 1870 and 1875 that these floods came to an end. The Überfuhrstraße recalls the former significance of the area as a ferry point across the Danube. In the late 19th century, Jedlesee expanded beyond its village core, acquiring suburban architecture characterized by secessionist and neoclassical elements. Today, the Aupark Jedlesee serves as one of the last natural green oases in Floridsdorf, while the suspension bridge to the Danube Island and the planned Hindu temple add a unique touch to the district.
